Since Twitter transitioned to X, numerous users have been searching for a suitable replacement. Meta’s Threads has emerged as a popular choice. However, a significant and expected shift is on the horizon: advertisements will soon appear in your feeds.
Threads ads set to launch in early 2025
Sylvia Varnham O’Regan and Kalley Huang report for The Information:
Meta Platforms is planning to roll out advertisements in its text-based app, Threads, starting early next year, aiming to leverage the app’s swift growth, according to three individuals familiar with the company’s intentions.
A team from Instagram’s advertising department is spearheading the initiative, which is still in its infancy, according to the sources. Threads aims to start this campaign by allowing a select group of advertisers to generate and publish ads within the app beginning in January, one source noted.
On one hand, this development was somewhat anticipated. Every social networking platform eventually must find a path to profitability, and advertising is the primary means to achieve that.
However, the timing of this news poses a slight challenge for Meta.
Recently, X has experienced a notable departure of users in light of Elon Musk’s increased political engagement. Bluesky seems to be benefiting from an influx of new users, and Threads is likely sharing in this as well.
Nonetheless, having Instagram’s advertising experts involved could yield benefits. Typically, Instagram offers higher quality ads compared to many other platforms.
This quality might be attributed to Instagram’s focus on visual content, but it is hoped that Meta’s successful track record with Instagram ads can translate into an effective advertising experience for Threads as well.
