The highly anticipated AirPods Pro 3 are set to launch later this year. While Apple is continually enhancing the AirPods Pro 2 with fresh software features, a new hardware iteration is also on the horizon. AirPods Pro 3 are anticipated to be unveiled in September, coinciding with the release of the iPhone 17 series. Here are three exciting features we’re eager to see.
Revolutionary H3 Chip
Per Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the AirPods Pro 3 will feature a completely new H3 chip.
While previous Apple chips have occasionally delivered only marginal upgrades, the evolution of the H-series chips for AirPods has consistently resulted in significant enhancements.
This notable improvement can likely be attributed to the lengthy developmental timeframe between updates. The H1 chip for AirPods Pro lasted three years before the H2 was introduced with the AirPods Pro 2. Now, with the impending release of the AirPods Pro 3, it will have been another three years of anticipation before the arrival of the H3 chip.
Here’s how Apple characterized the capabilities of the H2 chip when the AirPods Pro 2 launched:
the advanced H2 chip provides an outstanding acoustic experience and significantly enhances noise cancellation capabilities compared to the previous generation. Equipped with a new low-distortion audio driver and customized amplifier, AirPods Pro now deliver richer bass and more precise sound across an extended frequency range. The robust H2 chip also facilitates on-device processing, which decreases disruptive environmental noise through Adaptive Transparency, allowing users to manage sounds like passing sirens or loud construction.
The H2 chip has already powered numerous feature updates over the past couple of years, so we can surely expect the H3 to introduce an array of new functionalities upon its release.
My personal wish: enhanced battery longevity.
Redesigned AirPods Pro 3
According to Gurman, the AirPods Pro 3 will feature ‘a refreshed design.’
Currently, this is the extent of available information regarding the redesign.
While significant alterations are not anticipated, since the AirPods Pro’s design has been largely successful, inspiring even the redesigned AirPods 4, minor adjustments to the stem or ear fit might be forthcoming.
Enhanced Noise Cancellation Feature
For me, one of the standout features of the AirPods Pro 2 was its enhanced Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) capability.
Apple reportedly plans to bring similar advancements to the upcoming AirPods Pro model.
The ANC feature in the AirPods Pro 3 is said to be significantly improved over the existing system, likely leveraging the new functionalities offered by the H3 chip.
Wildcard Addition: New Health Feature(s)
I’m adding this as a wildcard addition due to its uncertain nature, but Gurman has recently shared that three or more health functionalities are under consideration for future AirPods models:
- Heart rate monitoring, akin to features available in the Apple Watch
- Temperature sensing
- New sensors that could enable a range of physiological measurements
Amongst these options, Gurman believes heart rate monitoring is the most likely to be included with the AirPods Pro 3.
That said, the introduction of health features typically entails more caution and regulatory scrutiny, which could lead to delays.
Apple recently rolled out its inaugural health features for the AirPods Pro 2 in iOS 18.1, indicating that even more capabilities might be on the way.
Conclusion: AirPods Pro 3 Features
The AirPods Pro 2 stand out as one of Apple’s premium products, and the three-year wait for an update only heightens the excitement for their successor. While I thoroughly enjoy my AirPods Pro 2, I have no doubt that I will quickly purchase the AirPods Pro 3 upon release.
