In terms of WI-Fi routers, AmpliFi may not be the first brand that comes to mind, but if you’ve been drawn to svelte and straightforward mesh options like Eero and Nest Wifi, AmpliFi ought to be on your list of options. I adore the matte black style with the green touchscreen and underflow. With night mode turning off the lighting at night, the Alien doesn’t annoy you when you’re watching TV in the dark and it looks excellent enough to keep in the foreground.
Software-wise, AmpliFi has kept things straightforward, but its app gets the job done with more settings than a typical mesh system and without the complexities of a conventional router.
There Are Better Alternatives To AmpliFi Alien
Even if this is your first router, AmpliFi Alien gives you a sense of control over your home network. Unfortunately, its design appears to have hampered performance a little bit, since coverage fell short of my expectations and upload speeds began to slow down a few rooms away from the router. It appears that the ideal way to utilize Alien is in a mesh, even in a three-bedroom home like ours. Even at this speed, AmpliFi Alien is not the least expensive Wi-Fi 6 router you can get. For $700, a package containing the base router and an Alien Mesh Point may be ordered.
Up to 3,000 square feet and 6,000 square feet, respectively, should be covered by a single router when using the mesh point. Retailers including Best Buy, B&H, and AmpliFi’s own website all carry the AmpliFi Alien.
The Alien looks terrific, even when taking into account some of the excellent mesh router designs that have emerged in recent years, such as ASUS ZenWiFi, Google Nest, and Netgear Orbi. Its cylindrical, matte-black shape seems understated enough to be left on display in my living room. You may put it next to a wall because the power and WAN cables are in a recess on the bottom. Simply remember to give some space for ventilation to keep it cold.
