Another State Joins the Movement to Support Apple Wallet IDs This Year

One more state has pledged to introduce digital IDs in Apple Wallet by the year’s end. Illinois has announced plans to unveil what it describes as “the premier mobile ID system in the country” by late 2025…

As of January 1, new legislation in Illinois allows the Secretary of State’s office to first issue digital ID cards and driver’s licenses. This initiative will see the state working alongside Apple to integrate IDs into the Apple Wallet.

In a statement released today, Illinois Secretary Alexi Giannoulias affirmed that the state will roll out Apple Wallet ID support by the end of this year.

“We are thrilled to have initiated our collaboration with Apple – a company that aligns with our commitment to data security – to provide IDs in Apple Wallet, ensuring convenience and privacy for the residents of Illinois. This marks the beginning of a comprehensive strategy to deliver a state-of-the-art mobile driver’s license and state ID program utilizing top-tier technology for our citizens.”

When the program goes live, residents of Illinois will have the ability to store their IDs within their iPhones’ Apple Wallet. The digital IDs will be recognized at “selected businesses and venues” and can be used at certain TSA checkpoints.

Residents can visit the Illinois Secretary of State’s website for more information and to sign up for notifications as the digital ID development unfolds throughout the year.
