Apple Aims to ‘Duplicate’ Your Doctor in 2024 with New Project Mulberry

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is developing a completely redesigned Health app. This initiative, codenamed Mulberry, will introduce a new health coach and is slated to launch next spring with iOS 19.4.

Redesigned Health App

Gurman refers to this new health coach as an “AI agent” that aims to “mimic” your actual physician. This aligns with Tim Cook’s long-term vision for Apple’s most significant societal impact to be in healthcare.

The health coach will be part of the reimagined health app, expected to debut with iOS 19.4, as reported by Mark Gurman:

The project has undergone various developments and has involved multiple departments at Apple, including its AI team. Now, the project is advancing rapidly, aiming for a release as early as iOS 19.4 in spring or summer of next year.

This revamped health app will leverage the extensive health data Apple has collected about users (especially those with an Apple Watch), utilizing this information to inform the new AI coach and generate personalized health recommendations.

Innovative AI Agent

Reportedly, this new AI agent is being developed using data sourced from doctors employed by Apple. The company intends to recruit “external physicians” to create informative videos for the updated health app. Apple is on the lookout for specialists in sleep, nutrition, physical therapy, mental health, and cardiology.

These videos will aid in explaining health concerns and will be filmed at a new site in Oakland, California. Gurman notes that Apple is also aiming to recruit a prominent medical figure to act as a ‘host’ for the service, informally referred to as ‘Health+’ by some within the company.

A significant aspect of this app will be food tracking, enabling users to monitor their dietary intake. Gurman indicates that the AI agents will also assist users with nutritional guidance.

Additionally, Apple wants to utilize the iPhone’s rear cameras to analyze workouts and offer feedback to users, which might eventually be integrated into Apple Fitness+:

Apple is exploring features that leverage the cameras in its devices, including the rear camera of the iPhone. The proposal is for the AI agent to evaluate users’ workouts and provide guidance to enhance their techniques. This feature could ultimately be linked to other Apple services, such as the current Fitness+ platform.
