Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that Apple is developing a new smart home doorbell aimed at competing with Ring. This device is expected to feature “advanced facial recognition” and will connect wirelessly with smart home locks.
While Apple currently sells various HomeKit-compatible locks, the introduction of a doorbell with facial recognition marks a new initiative. Gurman suggests that this doorbell may automatically unlock your front door simply by recognizing your face:
The concept is that the doorbell could autonomously unlock the door for residents by scanning their face — similar to how Face ID operates on their iPhone.
Though it’s uncertain, this doorbell will likely work with numerous third-party HomeKit locks available today. Gurman indicates that Apple might collaborate with a specific lock manufacturer, offering a complete system in one purchase.
Currently, this smart home doorbell is in its initial development stages and won’t be available until “at least the end of next year,” as per the report. It will also utilize Apple’s new proprietary networking chip.
In the upcoming year, Apple is anticipated to significantly broaden its presence in the smart home segment with a new control device that could be mounted on walls and might include a speaker base. Think of it as an Apple version of the Google Nest Hub. Additionally, a refreshed Apple TV and HomePod mini are on the horizon as part of these plans.
