Apple Continues Development on Next-Gen CarPlay Following 2024 Deadline Miss

In 2022, Apple introduced a revamped CarPlay experience referred to as “CarPlay 2.0.” Unfortunately, this upgraded version has not yet been launched, leading many to speculate whether Apple has secretly abandoned the initiative after missing two deadlines. However, DMN has uncovered indications that Apple is still advancing the project.

CarPlay 2.0 is actively being developed

According to the code in the recently released iOS 18.3 beta 2, which was issued to developers on Tuesday, Apple continues to refine the CarPlay 2.0 project. This latest beta includes several mentions of “CarPlayHybridInstrument” within the Maps app. This feature was showcased in Apple’s promotional materials for the new CarPlay, highlighting its ability to juxtapose map directions with the speedometer and other vehicle gauges.

Additionally, today’s beta revealed new codes associated with managing the vehicle’s air conditioning through CarPlay, further supporting the idea that the project is still in progress and not yet abandoned.

To summarize, CarPlay is an iOS interface designed to be displayed on a vehicle’s built-in screen when an iPhone is connected. In June 2022, Apple announced collaborations with automakers to integrate CarPlay more thoroughly into vehicles, allowing drivers to manage not only media but also essential vehicle functions directly from CarPlay.

Initially, Apple indicated that the first models equipped with the new CarPlay experience would debut in 2023, but that did not materialize. A subsequent deadline was set for late 2024, which has also passed without any updates. As of now, Apple has not provided a new timeline for the launch of vehicles with the next generation of CarPlay.

Determining the exact reasons for the delays is challenging. Some speculate that automakers are hesitant to grant Apple full control over their vehicles (e.g., GM’s decision to remove CarPlay from its electric cars), while others suggest that CarPlay 2.0 may still be under development, as Apple continues to introduce associated features in iOS 18.

We must await an official announcement from Apple, but the knowledge that the company is still working internally on this project provides hope for those eager to experience the new CarPlay features in the future.
