As per Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Apple is not developing a new variant of its AirPort wireless router. Nevertheless, the company is exploring other projects that might function as a wireless access point, so there’s no reason to lose hope just yet.
Recently, we received updates about Apple’s proprietary wireless networking chip, named Proxima. Indications are that this chip will be integrated into multiple home-related devices, such as the Apple TV and HomePod. Additionally, it is expected to appear in the iPhone 17 and upcoming Mac models.
Notably, the Proxima chip is designed with sophistication that may enable Apple to transform it into a wireless router:
The Proxima chip is advanced enough that it could theoretically convert a device like an Apple TV box or HomePod into a wireless access point. Google has previously launched products that combine Wi-Fi routers with smart speakers.
Gurman mentions that the wireless capabilities of the forthcoming Apple TV and HomePods may not be a focal point unless Apple opts to activate the wireless access point feature.
Regardless, it’s exciting to realize that this possibility exists. If Apple choses to do so, we could see a new Apple-designed wireless access point, reminiscent of the AirPort Express, reentering our lives. Many enthusiasts have longed for this, especially since Apple discontinued its AirPort line years ago, with the last device released in 2013.
