Apple is Allegedly Considering 5G Connectivity for Vision Pro, and That’s Exciting News!

Apple has been diligently developing new 5G modems for some time, and we anticipate their introduction in the iPhone SE 4 next spring. However, a recent report from Bloomberg sheds light on Apple’s modem roadmap that includes cellular capabilities for several upcoming products, one of which is the Apple Vision Pro.

Cellular Connectivity for Apple Vision Pro

While it’s unlikely that cellular modems will be included in the M5 chip refresh slated for next year, Mark Gurman has mentioned that Apple is exploring the possibility of adding cellular connectivity to the Apple Vision Pro:

The company is also contemplating cellular support for headsets, including future iterations of the Vision Pro. Eventually, this technology could be utilized in lightweight augmented reality glasses, although such devices are still years away.

Apple is allegedly testing two types of 5G modems:

  • A first-generation model, expected to launch with the iPhone SE 4, iPhone 17 Air, and entry-level iPads next year, emphasizing cost-effectiveness and efficiency.
  • A premium model, anticipated in 2026, which will offer faster 5G speeds for the iPhone 18 Pro and Macs.

It remains unclear which modem will be integrated into the Apple Vision Pro, as the Bloomberg report doesn’t provide specifics.

Nonetheless, it is crucial for Apple Vision Pro to maintain high power efficiency due to its relatively small battery. Therefore, I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple opts for the first-generation modem for the Apple Vision Pro – but we will see how things unfold.

The Importance of Cellular Connectivity

I have long believed that equipping Vision Pro with cellular capability would be a logical step forward. While I don’t envision people using Vision Pro on the go in its current form factor, a future iteration that is sleeker and lighter may indeed change that.

Even if users don’t take them outside, there are many valuable potential applications for cellular connectivity. For instance, passengers on road trips could use Vision Pro to stream shows and movies while traveling. Cellular capabilities would also enhance productivity in areas without reliable Wi-Fi access.

Of course, using a phone as a hotspot is an option. However, this can quickly deplete your phone’s battery, and many data plans have restrictions on hotspot usage that the Apple Vision Pro could exceed rapidly.

With Apple’s 5G modems, users could enjoy ultra-fast connectivity directly on their Vision Pro, no matter where they are.
