Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has revealed that Apple is intensifying the development of a new version of the Studio Display. Initially launched in 2022, this monitor has not seen any updates since its debut. While specific details about the enhancements remain sparse, it appears that this new Studio Display will complement the soon-to-be-released M5 MacBook Pros.
Earlier last week, display supply chain authority Ross Young indicated that Apple is creating a new Studio Display featuring mini-LED technology, and now Mark Gurman from Bloomberg corroborates this information:
According to my sources, Apple is in the process of testing prototypes for a display, codenamed J427, expected to launch by 2026. This model will serve as a successor to the existing Studio Display, rather than the Pro Display XDR, and will maintain a design reminiscent of the 2022 version.
While Gurman’s report lacks extensive particulars, he shares an intriguing observation regarding Apple’s higher-end monitor, the Pro Display XDR. Since its launch in 2019, this model has been largely neglected by the company. It is missing several features present in the newer (and more affordable) Studio Display, including a webcam, built-in speakers, and a budget-friendly stand.
Despite this, it appears that Apple does not plan to introduce a second generation of the Pro Display XDR anytime soon. Gurman notes that a new iteration is ‘less of a priority for Apple.’ Nonetheless, the company remains focused on the professional market, and Gurman confirms that new Mac Pro and Mac Studio models are forthcoming.
Additionally, he suggests that Apple may eventually explore the development of an iMac larger than 24 inches.
