Apple to Discontinue iPhone SE and iPhone 14 Sales in Europe as USB-C Deadline Approaches

According to iGeneration, Apple is set to discontinue the iPhone SE and the iPhone 14 series by year-end, ahead of the new USB-C universal charging connector requirements.

The oldest models currently available directly from Apple include the third-generation iPhone SE, iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Plus. These devices use a Lightning port, which does not comply with the European Union regulations coming into effect in January 2025.

Apple had the option to release updated versions of these phones with USB-C ports, but they opted not to do so. Instead, the company has chosen to phase out these models a bit earlier than usual.

Nevertheless, this isn’t a significant loss as Apple plans to release a new fourth-generation iPhone SE in the spring of 2025, which will naturally incorporate a USB-C port. This new iPhone SE is anticipated to have a design similar to the iPhone 14, complete with an edge-to-edge display, enhanced camera, and USB-C charging capabilities.

Typically, Apple would have continued selling the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus in the EU until the arrival of the iPhone 16 next fall, at which point the 14 series would be phased out. Therefore, Apple is potentially losing about a year of sales for these models.

In markets outside the EU, expect Apple to keep selling the SE until the new version launches, along with the 14 series until the end of 2025. When that time arrives, the era of Lightning ports in Apple devices will officially conclude.
