Apple to Release AirTag 2 Next Year: Three Major Enhancements to Expect

As reported by Bloomberg, Apple is developing a second generation of its popular item tracker, the AirTag, first released in 2021. Here’s what we anticipate Apple will bring with AirTag 2.

Enhancements

According to a recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, AirTag 2 has successfully moved into manufacturing tests, and there are three primary enhancements to look forward to:

  • Extended range
  • Enhanced wireless chip
  • Increased focus on privacy

Apple is expected to introduce a new ultra-wide band chip in the next-gen AirTag, which will allow for a range increase from 30-90 meters, compared to the current 10-30 meters. The new wireless chip may also enhance location accuracy in less populated areas.

Previously, AirTags have been misused in stalking incidents, with some individuals even modifying the devices to disable the built-in speaker, thereby complicating the identification of nearby AirTags. Improvements in anti-stalking measures may make it easier for vulnerable individuals to detect AirTags.

Launch Timeline

The AirTag 2 is projected to launch in mid-2025, according to Bloomberg:

Apple is in the process of developing a new AirTag—code-named B589—for release around the middle of next year.

In the meantime, if you’re considering purchasing the current AirTag model, they are currently discounted, with a single AirTag priced at $24, and a 4-pack available for $69.99. This brings the cost down to approximately $18 per AirTag with the 4-pack!
