Apple Unveils Custom Widgets UI for CarPlay 2 as Development Advances

The highly anticipated next-generation CarPlay is still on the horizon, even though Apple’s website indicates that the first models are set to debut in 2024. Recently, new images have leaked showcasing a widget interface for CarPlay 2, providing insights into Apple’s active development.

Today, Aaron Perris took to X to reveal his recent findings of the CarPlay 2 widget interface, sharing a total of four images.

The leaked visuals were discovered in an EU database, the same source from which CarPlay 2 assets have previously emerged.

The widgets displayed include:

  • A clock widget that shows the time for a selected city
  • A weather widget providing forecast details
  • A calendar widget to display your upcoming events
  • A combined navigation and Now Playing widget
  • A standalone Now Playing widget

As illustrated below, CarPlay 2 maintains a familiar column of apps along the left side of the screen, similar to the current CarPlay interface.

DMN’s Perspective

This CarPlay 2 interface resembles the standard widget UI already present across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, which is beneficial as it aligns with user familiarity.

Nonetheless, this resemblance raises questions about the absence of custom widgets in the current version of CarPlay. As the release of CarPlay 2 remains uncertain, many users are beginning to wonder if Apple should channel its efforts into enhancing the existing system instead.
