A new year has come, and Apple has promptly updated its list of vintage and obsolete items. This time, the well-known Apple Watch Series 4 has been categorized as a vintage product, along with one of the last Intel-based Macs released by the company.
Apple Watch Series 4 is now classified as a vintage product
As of today, all models of the Apple Watch Series 4 are labeled as “vintage” globally (via MacRumors). This classification includes both the aluminum and stainless steel variants in 40mm and 44mm sizes. The Apple Watch Series 4 was launched in September 2018, representing the first significant redesign of the device with a larger display, slimmer bezels, and rounder corners.
However, the Series 4 is recognized for more than just its design. Before the official announcement, leaked images of the product appeared on DMN, along with pictures of the iPhone XS.
To clarify, Apple defines a product as “vintage” when it has been out of sale for more than five years. If a product has not been sold for over seven years, it is then classified as obsolete. Vintage products can still receive repairs as long as parts are available, whereas obsolete products are ineligible for repairs.
Following the release of watchOS 11 this year, Apple has officially ceased software support for the Apple Watch Series 4, which received watchOS 10 as its final major update.
In related news, Apple has also placed the 2019 15-inch MacBook Pro on the vintage list. This model was the last 15-inch MacBook Pro released, as it was quickly succeeded by the 16-inch MacBook Pro, which was the last model featuring an Intel processor. Unlike the Series 4, the 2019 MacBook Pro is capable of running the latest macOS version.
In July 2024, products such as the iPhone X, the first-generation AirPods, and the original HomePod were also classified as vintage.
