If you were hoping for Apple to unveil a new “mini” variant of the iPhone, it’s time to accept that this won’t be happening. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported that there are no plans for another “iPhone mini” model.
In a recent Q&A with Bloomberg subscribers, Gurman was asked about the likelihood of Apple releasing a device akin to the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini. He replied:
At this point, we’ll see how the market responds. Currently, they’re not developing anything. There’s no smaller iPhone in the works right now. They’ve really moved away from that. Their focus is on producing devices with roughly 6-inch displays as the standard size, and they’re aiming to increase that size further. As phones get larger, even 6-inch models begin to feel smaller.
This news isn’t particularly shocking, as there were no previous hints that Apple was pursuing a new iPhone mini form. Nonetheless, it will undoubtedly disappoint a vocal group of iPhone users who desire the return of this size category.
Apple launched the iPhone 12 mini, featuring a 5.2-inch display, in 2020, followed by the iPhone 13 mini the subsequent year. However, with the introduction of the iPhone 14 lineup in 2022, Apple decided to retire the “mini” model, replacing it with the iPhone 14 Plus. The iPhone 13 mini stayed in Apple’s offerings as a more affordable option until its discontinuation in 2023.
This year, there’s speculation that the iPhone 16 Plus will be succeeded by the brand-new, super-slim iPhone 17 Air. It seems clear that neither the “mini” nor “Plus” strategies have met Apple’s expectations.
