Apple’s AirPort Router May Not Return, But Don’t Give Up Hope Just Yet

As reported in Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Apple is currently not developing a new version of its AirPort wireless router. Nevertheless, there are indications that they are working on an alternative that could function as a wireless access point, keeping the possibilities alive.

Recently, new insights emerged regarding Apple’s proprietary wireless networking chip known as Proxima. This chip is expected to be integrated into various home-centric products, such as the Apple TV and HomePod, and will later appear in the iPhone 17 and Mac models.

A fascinating aspect of this chip is its advanced capabilities, which could enable Apple to potentially transform it into a wireless router:

The Proxima chip is designed with such sophistication that it could theoretically convert a home device like an Apple TV or HomePod into a wireless access point. Google has previously released products that blend these functionalities, offering a Wi-Fi router alongside a smart speaker.

According to Gurman, the wireless functionality of upcoming Apple TV and HomePod models likely wouldn’t be emphasized, even if Apple decides to activate the access point feature.

Regardless, it’s exciting to know that this possibility exists. If Apple decides to pursue it, we could see an Apple-crafted wireless access point, reminiscent of the AirPort Express, making a comeback. This has been a common wish among many, particularly since the discontinuation of Apple’s AirPort lineup years ago, with the last device released in 2013.
