Apple’s Magic Mouse Redesign: What We Know So Far

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has recently announced that Apple is set to completely revamp the Magic Mouse for the first time since its launch in 2009. Throughout its fifteen-year history, the design has largely remained unchanged, aside from the transition from AA batteries to Lightning in 2015, and from Lightning to USB-C expected in 2024.

However, changes are on the horizon.

Charging Port Location

One of the most frequent criticisms of the Magic Mouse concerns its charging port placement. Currently, users must connect it from the bottom, which renders the mouse unusable during recharging.

While some proponents argue this method benefits battery longevity, others contend that since users typically recharge only every six weeks, this is not a significant issue. Nevertheless, it remains a frustrating aspect for many.

Nonetheless, Gurman reveals exciting updates for the next-generation Magic Mouse:

Apple aims to design something more relevant while addressing long-standing complaints — yes, including the charging port dilemma.

So, soon, this concern might be resolved.

Improved Ergonomics

We do not have detailed information on the new Magic Mouse’s appearance, but it is expected to be entirely reimagined, focusing on enhanced ergonomics. Apple intends to create a mouse that integrates better into the modern workspace, possibly resembling the MX Master:

The good news is, there’s a new Magic Mouse underway. Reports indicate that Apple’s design team has been prototyping various versions of the accessory in recent months, working towards a design that aligns with contemporary needs.

In a world dominated by touch screens, voice commands, and gestures, the mouse’s relevance has somewhat diminished.

Many Mac users appreciate Logitech’s MX Master mouse for its ergonomics and added features, even if it lacks some of the multi-touch gestures found in the Magic Mouse. It would be intriguing to see Apple merge the best features of both devices.

Expected Release Date

The new Magic Mouse is still in early development and is unlikely to be released until 2026. Gurman suggests that we should not anticipate anything within the next 12 to 18 months. Additionally, Apple is working on a refreshed MacBook Pro featuring OLED technology set to debut in 2026, which could coincide with the Magic Mouse’s launch.
