Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack for iPhone Deserves More Than a One-Time Experiment

After launching MagSafe charging with the iPhone 12, Apple introduced the MagSafe Battery Pack accessory. It featured seamless integration with iOS and unique reverse wireless charging capabilities, making it an attractive option for iPhone users and a staple in my daily carry.

Regrettably, it turned out to be another discontinued accessory as Apple phased it out with the iPhone 15.

While the MagSafe Battery Pack was not groundbreaking and had its drawbacks, such as insufficient power to fully charge most iPhone 12 models and a slow 5W charging rate, it still provided smooth integration with iOS. For example, it displayed elegant animations when connected to an iPhone and showed its status in the iOS battery widget, alongside the iPhone, AirPods, and other Apple products.

Additionally, the MagSafe Battery Pack boasted a reverse wireless charging feature that third-party alternatives cannot replicate. This allowed users to charge the battery pack by plugging in the iPhone, ensuring the phone charged first before refueling the battery pack.

It’s important to note that you can still use the MagSafe Battery Pack with currently available iPhones, provided you already own one or are willing to purchase a used one. However, it utilizes the older Lightning connector. Furthermore, as iPhone battery capacities have increased over the years, the MagSafe Battery Pack may struggle to keep up with charging modern devices.

Current Market Overview

Today’s market features several alternatives to the MagSafe Battery Pack, many of which offer notable enhancements over Apple’s version.

My top pick is the Anker MagGo Power Bank, which magnetically attaches to the back of your iPhone. It charges at 15W and can power an iPhone 16 from 0% to 50% in just 45 minutes. It also includes a built-in kickstand and a small display on the side to indicate the battery pack’s charge level.

An alternative option is the Anker Nano Power Bank, which features a compact, foldable design that connects directly to your iPhone’s USB-C port for a neat, all-in-one solution.

Yet, I still reminisce about the days when Apple showed more commitment to MagSafe accessories for the iPhone. With the MagSafe Battery Pack and MagSafe Duo now discontinued, there seem to be no upcoming accessories in sight. Apple appears to have passed the baton to third-party creators for future MagSafe products.

Additionally, we shouldn’t overlook Apple’s earlier attempt at iPhone battery packs with the Smart Battery Case, which was last issued for the iPhone 11 and has not seen a revival since.
