Apple’s Revival of the Discontinued AirPort Router Seems More Likely Than Ever

Apple’s Revival of the Discontinued AirPort Router Seems More Likely Than Ever

Apple used to manufacture Wi-Fi routers named AirPorts, but they exited the router market after discontinuing the last AirPort in 2018. However, a wave of recent speculation suggests that a new AirPort could potentially be in the works.

Significant new home device initiative from Apple

Traditionally, Apple has regarded home devices as somewhat of a side project.

Consider the present range of products: there’s the HomePod, HomePod mini, and the Apple TV 4K.

These items typically do not receive substantial investment from Apple and rarely experience significant updates. The company seems to be satisfied with introducing them and then stepping back.

Apple has also developed a smart home platform called HomeKit and invested in the cross-compatible Matter platform. However, it does not produce its own home accessories like light bulbs or security cameras.

Starting next year, however, this situation is set to change.

Apple is gearing up for a major new initiative in the realm of home devices.

HomePod with display concept

In 2025, we can expect new launches for Apple TV and HomePod mini devices, along with the introduction of the new ‘HomePad’ device.

Then in 2026, Apple is anticipated to release a smart home camera—the first in what could potentially be a series of new smart home accessories.

The home category will no longer be just a side venture for Apple, setting the stage for a possible AirPort comeback.

Additionally, there’s another significant indicator that seems promising for AirPort enthusiasts.

Upcoming Apple Wi-Fi chip rollout

Reports indicate that Apple is shifting away from using Broadcom’s combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips in its products.

The substitution? Apple’s proprietary in-house solution.

The company plans to implement its own Wi-Fi chip across a broad array of devices.

For 2025, this includes:

  • iPhone 17
  • new Apple TV
  • new HomePod mini
  • and likely the HomePad too

Then in 2026, iPads and Macs are expected to adopt this new chip as well.

Mark Gurman notes:

Apple aims to create an end-to-end wireless solution that is deeply integrated with its other components and is more energy-efficient… By incorporating a custom wireless chip into its smart home devices, the products will be able to synchronize data more swiftly and closely interact with each other.

With Apple taking control of the Wi-Fi chips in its devices and its rekindled focus on home devices, there’s renewed optimism for the possibility of a new AirPort router.

Reviving the AirPort to enhance the Apple ecosystem

AirPort

Looking back on the legacy of the AirPort, it is evident that the product garnered a devoted fan base.

Now, Apple has more incentive than ever to produce its own router.

Apple’s product offerings have expanded significantly, and the company continues to enhance these products with robust ecosystem integrations.

With several new home devices planned and a proprietary Wi-Fi chip being installed in its devices, a new AirPort would enable Apple to create even more ‘magic moments’ for users.

Most Apple devices require a solid network connection to be effective. By introducing a new AirPort, Apple would have the opportunity to manage the complete user experience on Wi-Fi—and soon on 5G as well.

Although it would be a substantial undertaking, Apple is well-equipped and motivated to re-enter the router market, and the conditions may be right for an AirPort revival in the coming years.
