Apple’s Upcoming Major Product Might Be More Distant Than You Anticipate

For quite some time, speculation has surrounded Apple’s potential development of AR smart glasses. So far, nothing definitive has emerged, although we now have the Apple Vision Pro, which shares some characteristics with rumored AR glasses, yet in a considerably bulkier design.

Nonetheless, even as companies like Meta and Snapchat showcase intriguing augmentations with their glasses, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg suggests that Apple is approximately 3-5 years away from achieving the right solution.

While Apple persists in its quest for AR glasses, a launch appears to be far off, as detailed in Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter:

Sources indicate that Apple is actively working on augmented reality smart glasses, but a release is not anticipated in the near term.

There’s much that Apple must perfect for this product to succeed. They need to condense multiple computational components, design a stylish form, ensure battery longevity that enhances usability, and create high-resolution displays that maintain a satisfactory media experience without major compromises.

While Apple could likely develop a luxurious pair of glasses with these features, it might not be feasible for a consumer-friendly option. Entities such as Snapchat and Meta have introduced AR glasses, but these are more prototypes than actual consumer merchandise. Meta’s offering remains a prototype demo, while Snapchat’s version is solely accessible to developers. It’s likely neither company has released a price point to avoid deterring potential interest.

Recently, I had the chance to test Snapchat’s augmented reality glasses, which were indeed impressive. They had some drawbacks, such as limited field-of-view, but overall provided a remarkable experience. However, I’m sure the bulky design would not align with Apple’s standards.

It’s understandable that Apple isn’t ready to launch a pair of AR glasses, yet the news still leaves room for disappointment.
