This week, the microblogging platform Bluesky introduced a significant new feature—Trending Topics. This enhancement allows users to see the current hot topics being discussed on Bluesky, although there are still some limitations associated with it.
Trending Topics Now Available on Bluesky
Bluesky’s official account announced that the Trending Topics feature is now accessible on both the app and website. As anticipated, users can view a list of the most actively discussed topics on Bluesky at any given moment. By selecting a topic, users can access the most popular and recent posts related to it.
Currently, Bluesky’s Trending Topics are global and do not vary by region. Furthermore, the company has indicated that this feature is in beta, and users should note a few important details. For instance, the Trending Topics feature is presently limited to English-speaking users, with plans to support additional languages in the future.
Users have the option to hide Trending Topics by clicking the “X” button or disabling the feature in the settings. Additionally, muted words will not appear in the Trending Topics section. This update positions Bluesky in direct competition with Threads, which has so far confined its Trending Topics feature to users in the U.S. and Japan.
Bluesky has experienced rapid growth lately, adding 10 million users in a single month, bringing its total user base to over 25 million, according to metrics from a website utilizing the platform’s API. This swift expansion is pressuring Meta to accelerate the rollout of new features for Threads.
The rivalry between Bluesky and Threads is intensifying as more individuals seek alternatives to X (previously known as Twitter).
The Bluesky app is available for free on the App Store and requires an iPhone running iOS 15.1 or a later version. Ensure you have the latest app update installed to access all new features.
