Last month, OpenAI unveiled a significant upgrade to the macOS ChatGPT application, introducing the functionality to read on-screen content from various applications. The company is currently rolling out an update that broadens support for Apple Notes and additional third-party applications.
What’s New in ChatGPT for macOS
OpenAI notes that the newest version of ChatGPT for macOS has expanded its compatibility to include several more third-party applications. Users can now utilize the app to read content from Apple Notes, Notion, and Quip. Additionally, the updated support list includes BBEdit, Android Studio, AppCode, and several others. Below is the comprehensive list of newly supported applications for ChatGPT on Mac:
- New IDEs: BBEdit, MatLab, Nova, Script Editor, and TextMate;
- VS Code Variants: VSCode Insiders, VSCodium, Cursor, and WindSurf;
- JetBrains IDEs: Android Studio, AppCode, CLion, DataGrip, GoLand, IntelliJ IDEA, PHPStorm, PyCharm, RubyMine, RustRover, and WebStorm;
- Terminal Applications: Prompt and Warp;
- Productivity Tools: Apple Notes, Notion, and Quip
Initially, this feature was limited to iTerm 2, Terminal, TextEdit, VS Code, and Apple’s Xcode. For instance, users can instruct ChatGPT to analyze code from an Xcode project and request suggestions for improvements without the need to manually copy and paste the code into the ChatGPT app. Furthermore, it can simultaneously access content from multiple applications, which is especially beneficial for developers.
For privacy considerations, users have the ability to manage when and which applications ChatGPT can access. “You maintain the same controls over how this data is stored or processed as you ordinarily would over anything else in your conversation history,” OpenAI states.
Integration with third-party applications is exclusive to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers. There is currently no information regarding when (or if) this feature will be available for free ChatGPT users.
The ChatGPT app for macOS can be downloaded from OpenAI’s official website. While it is available at no cost, ChatGPT Plus subscribers can log in to access their complete accounts. Moreover, it is important to note that the recently released macOS 15.2 allows users to engage with ChatGPT directly through Siri.
