ChatGPT for macOS Now Compatible with Third-Party Applications

This year, OpenAI introduced a native ChatGPT application for macOS, simplifying access for Mac users to the company’s AI chatbot. Now, a significant update is being released, bringing integration capabilities with third-party applications.

ChatGPT now features integration with macOS applications

This update allows users to instruct ChatGPT to read content displayed on-screen in certain applications. In this initial version, integration is compatible with developer tools including VS Code, Terminal, iTerm2, and Apple’s own Xcode.

In a demonstration shared with DMN, ChatGPT demonstrated its ability to comprehend code from an Xcode project, offering code suggestions without any need for manual copy and paste by the user. Notably, it can read content from multiple applications concurrently, enhancing productivity for developers.

OpenAI plans to broaden the range of app integrations in future updates. Currently, this feature is exclusive to the macOS version of ChatGPT, with one important caveat: it requires a paid subscription to ChatGPT, at least for the time being.

Starting today, ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers will gain access to integration with third-party applications on macOS, with Enterprise and Education users expected to receive access “in the upcoming weeks.” OpenAI has expressed a desire to eventually make this feature available to all users, though a timeline for this is not yet available.

For privacy considerations, users maintain control over when and which applications ChatGPT is allowed to read.

Additionally, with the upcoming macOS 15.2 in beta, Apple is incorporating the anticipated ChatGPT integration into Siri, allowing users to pose questions based on the visible content on their screens. However, this feature currently does not support interaction with specific applications.

The ChatGPT app for macOS can be downloaded from OpenAI’s website, where it’s available for free. ChatGPT Plus subscribers can log in for full account access. In a related update, OpenAI is also launching the ChatGPT app for Windows users today.
