Choosing the iPhone 17 Next Year Will Be More Challenging Than Ever for Users Like Me

Choosing the iPhone 17 Next Year Will Be More Challenging Than Ever for Users Like Me

Typically, choosing an iPhone model each year is straightforward. My usual pick is the Pro model, specifically the smaller version. However, with the upcoming iPhone 17 series and the anticipated ultra-slim 17 Air variant, my decision is more complex than ever. Here are the major considerations I’m taking into account.

Goodbye Plus, Hello Air in the iPhone 17 lineup

Apple is continuously innovating within its premium iPhone lineup, especially with the introduction of its fourth model.

The iPhone mini was discarded due to poor sales, replaced by the iPhone Plus, which also seems to be struggling to prove its worth.

Next year, Apple is set to launch the iPhone 17 Air instead. Key features include:

  • a remarkably thin design
  • a display that falls between the Pro and Pro Max sizes
  • only one rear camera
  • a premium price tag

While the 17 Air may not be the ‘ultimate’ iPhone, it signals a glimpse into the future.

This is akin to how the iPhone X was a significant step forward in design, albeit with certain trade-offs that reduce its appeal.

Many aspects of the iPhone 17 Air are appealing to me. After several iterations of the iPhone that barely altered the physical design, a significant change in form factor is invigorating.

Currently, I’m using an iPhone 16 Pro, and under normal circumstances, I would be looking to purchase the 17 Pro next year.

However, the introduction of the 17 Air might alter that plan. Here are three key factors that complicate my decision:

  • No more 5x telephoto lens: After missing the 5x telephoto option last year, I’ve been relishing it on my 16 Pro. It allows me to capture stunning images while exploring the city, eliminating distance as a limitation. Unless the 17 Air offers substantial advancements in digital zoom, relinquishing the telephoto lens will be a tough sacrifice.
  • Potential battery limitations: While this remains uncertain, it’s reasonable to conclude that the iPhone 17 Air will feature lesser battery performance compared to its thicker Pro variants. The extent of this reduction is crucial. I’m okay with minor differences, but details will be pivotal.
  • Uncertainty about display size: I’m generally satisfied with the display size on my iPhone 16 Pro. I prefer handling my phone with one hand while out and about, and I actually liked the slightly smaller 15 Pro display more than the larger 16 Pro. Transitioning from 6.3 inches to 6.6 inches with the 17 Air isn’t particularly exciting for me. That said, the slimmer profile might make the increased size manageable for one-handed use, so I’m holding off on conclusions for now.

Will the 17 Air be a worthwhile investment?

It will be challenging to forfeit so much for a new iPhone model, yet we’ll need to wait for Apple’s full lineup reveal to make an informed choice. Thus far, we have plenty of insights about the 17 Air but limited information on the 17 Pro and Pro Max.

I lean towards still purchasing the 17 Air, despite the compromises that come with it. However, if the 17 Pro includes impressive updates exclusive to the Pro range?

Apple could make my decision a lot tougher.
