Chrome Disables The Great Suspender Extension Because Of Malware

The popular Google Chrome extension, the Great Suspender, is not there anymore, as per recent announcements by Google. If you are mourning the loss of your tabs, then there is another way you can retrieve them from your browser history.

The Google Chrome Web Store disabled the popular browser extension this Thursday, February 4th. Users started receiving notifications saying that the Great Suspender was “disabled because it contains malware” on the same day creating concerns among many users regarding the loss of their tabs. The popular Chrome extension has been installed by browser users over 2 million times before Google announced that it was removed from its Web Store.

Before Chrome, Microsoft Edge Had Kicked Out The Great Suspender Extension

The extension helped in replacing tabs that users were not currently using with a gray screen by putting them to sleep. This helped in multitasking as users could keep innumerable tabs open on Chrome without using up memory and slowing down the performance speed. The tabs that were kept open turned into a gray screen till you returned and relaunched them with a click. This extension that helps millions in optimizing performance speed is no longer available in the Chrome Web Store.

The problem with the Great Suspender extension began last year when the extension started functioning under a new management. The original owner of this extension Dean Oemcke had sold it to a third party back in June 2020. The versions that came out after this comprised an exploit that could be used without user-consent. Owing to the discovery of this exploit in the Great Suspender, Microsoft Edge had disabled it from its web market some time ago. It now seems that Google Chrome is following in the footsteps of Microsoft by kicking out this extension from its Web Store.
