Despite rumors circulating on TikTok, Apple has not simply “added” Elon Musk’s Starlink to all iPhones.
In brief, the iPhone can utilize Starlink service like any other mobile provider. However, it’s important to note that Starlink support on iPhones is currently limited to a single carrier for users in the United States.
This is not a formal collaboration between Apple and Starlink. Rather, T-Mobile is utilizing its 1900MHz (band 25) spectrum to extend coverage through Starlink, and the iPhone is compatible with band 25. There’s nothing unique about iOS 18.3 apart from its support for T-Mobile’s latest network version. Apple has not formed any partnership with Starlink as of yet.
If T-Mobile customers wish to disable the Starlink option on their iPhones, there is a method to do so.
The option can be found in Settings > Cellular > your carrier > turn off Satellite.
Additionally, Apple has released documentation explaining how iPhones work with satellite capabilities provided by carriers. This new information outlines the difference between Apple’s satellite services and those offered through carriers.
Some mobile providers have enhanced their cellular services by integrating satellite technology through partnerships with satellite companies. Before heading off the grid, verify that your iPhone can take advantage of the satellite features provided by your carrier. Here’s what you need:
- iPhone 14, iPhone 15, or iPhone 16 (all models)
- The most recent version of iOS
- A compatible carrier
- Some carriers may require a specific cellular plan
When your iPhone is utilizing a carrier’s satellite feature, it will show a “SAT” indicator in the status bar.
Carrier charges or data fees may apply. For more details regarding satellite features offered by carriers and the supported regions or countries, please reach out to your mobile provider.
iPhones can also access Starlink as an internet service provider, similar to Spectrum or Xfinity. Starlink’s satellite internet connection can be set up at a single location, can be portable, and is even available during flights and cruises.
Currently, T-Mobile’s Starlink service is quite limited. It only allows users to send text messages through Starlink when out of reach of T-Mobile’s network. Also, this feature is still in beta, and users must register manually on T-Mobile’s website to gain access.
Looking ahead, Starlink plans to broaden its capabilities to offer mobile data for T-Mobile customers, which aligns with what Starlink provides to its direct ISP subscribers. However, it’s crucial to note that Starlink is not a mobile phone carrier, which is why T-Mobile’s partnership is essential in the first place.
As a final note, despite what social media may suggest, make sure to update to iOS 18.3 without delay. Keeping your iPhone updated is vital for accessing the latest bug fixes and security updates. There’s no reason to hold off on updating to iOS 18.3 because of the new Starlink feature.
