Disney has been gearing up to introduce a new flagship ESPN streaming platform, distinct from the existing ESPN+ service, and the anticipated launch this fall is quickly approaching. During Disney’s recent quarterly earnings call, CEO Bob Iger provided insights into what this new ESPN service will offer and confirmed its timing.
The new ESPN streaming service will be integrated within the current app, encompassing all existing cable and streaming offerings
The Walt Disney Company announced its quarterly earnings across all divisions. In this presentation, the executives emphasized the new standalone ESPN streaming service that is set to debut later this year.
Here are the key points to note:
“The flagship offering from ESPN, launching in early fall, remains our top priority,” stated Iger and Johnston. “We anticipate that the enhanced product and content experience—housed entirely within the ESPN app—will become a unique digital destination for sports aficionados that surpasses anything available in today’s market, offering the complete suite of ESPN’s networks along with ESPN+ and a variety of interactive and personalized features.”
Several significant details emerge from the announcement, including:
- Launch Timing: The service is confirmed for an “early fall” launch—likely in late August or early September, just in time for the NFL season.
- App: The new streaming service will be integrated into the current ESPN app, rather than being released as a standalone application.
- Content: Subscribers will have access to the comprehensive range of ESPN networks and ESPN+, creating a true all-in-one sports offering.
- Features: While details are somewhat vague, the service promises “highly interactive and personalized features.”
Pricing details have yet to be disclosed but are likely to be revealed closer to the service’s fall launch.
Recently, Disney introduced a dedicated ESPN tile in its Disney+ app. Currently, this tile provides some complimentary content for Disney+ subscribers, as well as access to ESPN+ content for those who subscribe.
It is anticipated that once the new ESPN streaming service goes live, users will be able to access its full offerings through the Disney+ tile as well, or directly in the dedicated ESPN app.
ESPN+ has often been seen as misleading, as its name suggests it provides additional content, whereas it is actually a separate service that does not include standard ESPN. With the launch of this new ESPN service, cord-cutters will finally have the chance to experience the complete ESPN programming via streaming.
