DJI Osmo Mobile 7P: Exploring Its Versatile Multifunctional Module

According to our sister site DroneDJ, DJI has unveiled the Osmo Mobile 7 gimbal series, featuring two distinct models. As vlogging has recently become a passion of mine, I’ve been experimenting with numerous smartphone gimbals. Fortuitously, DJI invited me to preview the Osmo Mobile 7P, which boasts an exciting new hardware feature.

Before diving into the hands-on experience, it’s worth mentioning that the Osmo Mobile 7P is the premium variant of the gimbal, with a more budget-friendly option also available. The model I am reviewing is the 7P. I will highlight the differences between these two versions throughout this review.

Introducing the DJI Osmo Mobile 7P

The DJI Osmo Mobile 7P arrives in a compact package, which includes the gimbal, a magnetic phone clamp, two USB-C cables, a storage pouch, and the new Multifunctional Module. While the more affordable Osmo Mobile 7 is offered in light gray, the 7P model features an all-black design.

The phone clamp attaches magnetically to the gimbal, secured by robust magnets, ensuring that your phone remains safely in place. For iPhone users, DJI also provides a MagSafe mount, which must be purchased separately for $19 (note that it is not compatible with the Multifunctional Module).

Setting up the Osmo Mobile gimbal is straightforward using DJI’s Mimo app, which connects to your phone via Bluetooth. The app has been enhanced with features specifically for the latest gimbal models. For example, it now includes ActiveTrack 7.0, an updated version of the company’s object-tracking technology, allowing it to detect multiple subjects in a frame and enabling users to switch focus between them with a simple tap.

DJI’s gimbals have always excelled in stabilization, and the company claims that their three-axis stabilization technology has improved further. In my tests, filming while walking, I found that the video from an iPhone 16 Pro Max was exceptionally steady, and the transitions were seamless. Additionally, the integrated selfie-stick feature is a fantastic bonus for vlogging.

Understanding the Multifunctional Module

One of the standout features of the Osmo Mobile 7P is the included Multifunctional Module. This compact accessory attaches magnetically to the phone clamp and significantly enhances the functionality of the gimbal.

This module is equipped with its own tracking sensor, meaning you can utilize DJI’s object-tracking technology without needing the app. The sensor can detect subjects and control the gimbal’s movements regardless of the camera application you are using on your phone. I tested this feature with the Apple Camera app on an iPhone, and it performed as expected.

The Multifunctional Module also features a light with adjustable brightness and color temperature. The brightness impressed me most, as it provides ample illumination for decent shots in dim settings. However, I did notice that the module tends to get quite warm and drains the battery rapidly when the light is activated.

Another significant benefit of the module is its capability to connect directly to the Mic Mini’s transmitter, allowing you to capture high-quality audio efficiently. This feature simplifies the workflow for filmmakers considerably.

Additional Insights

The controls for maneuvering the gimbal are user-friendly and intuitive, which I appreciate. Sometimes simplicity is the key. The Osmo Mobile 7P also functions as a power bank for your phone via its USB-C port and comes equipped with a built-in tripod.

While DJI claims up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge, this duration is only applicable when the Multifunctional Module is not in use.

On a related note, I have recently tested the DJI Mic Mini microphones, and they stand out as some of the best portable wireless microphones I have experienced, delivering exceptionally clear and high-quality audio.

Is the DJI Osmo Mobile 7P a Worthwhile Investment?

As previously mentioned, DJI is renowned for producing high-quality products, and the Osmo Mobile 7P is no exception. If you are on the lookout for a reliable gimbal that can elevate the professionalism of your videos, this is certainly worth considering.

With the Osmo Mobile 7P, DJI strikes a commendable balance between build quality and user-friendliness, alongside useful accessories that enhance the overall experience.

Priced at $149, the Osmo Mobile 7P represents a worthwhile purchase. The standard Osmo Mobile 7, priced at just $89, lacks features such as a selfie-stick and the dial for zoom and light adjustments. The economical version also excludes the Multifunctional Module, which can be purchased separately for $49.
