EU iPhone Users Now Able to Set Google Maps as Their Default Navigation App

On Friday, Google rolled out a significant update for Google Maps users on iOS, specifically for those located in the European Union. The updated version of the app now allows iPhone users to set Google Maps as their primary navigation app, thereby replacing Apple Maps entirely.

Set Google Maps as Your Default Navigation App – Limited to the EU

As reported by Macerkopf, Google Maps is now available as an option in the default navigation app settings on iOS. This means users can set Google Maps as the default application for opening addresses viewed on the web, rather than relying on Apple Maps.

This announcement follows a similar update from WhatsApp, which allows iPhone users to make it their default app for calls and texts.

While the ability to choose default apps on iOS was introduced in response to regulations from the European Union, Apple has made the feature accessible to all users. Nonetheless, the option to select a navigation app other than Apple Maps is restricted to EU residents with iOS 18.4, expected to launch publicly in the coming days.

In addition to customizing default apps for navigation, calls, and texts, iPhone users can also select default applications for email, call filtering, web browsing, translation, password management, payments (available in select regions), and keyboards. Users can access these settings by navigating to Settings > Apps > Default Apps on their iOS device.
