Everything We Know So Far About Apple’s 5G Modem

Apple has been focusing on developing its own 5G modem for quite some time. Although progress has been slower than anticipated, recent indications imply that we may witness the debut of Apple’s 5G modem next year. Continue reading for a comprehensive update on the latest developments.

Overview of Apple’s 5G modem progress

As expected, Apple aims for enhanced control over its hardware, having already designed its own SoCs for devices like the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. In 2019, the company signaled a strong intent to develop in-house cellular modems, acquiring Intel’s modem division for $1 billion. Apple’s goal was to create its own modem and reduce dependence on Qualcomm’s components.

Nevertheless, several years have elapsed without a device showcasing Apple’s proprietary cellular modem. Many rumors have circulated, indicating minimal advancements during this period.

A report from the WSJ last year claimed that the prototypes produced were deemed failures, suffering from slow performance and overheating issues, ultimately trailing behind Qualcomm’s existing 5G modems found in current iPhones. These setbacks have prompted Apple to postpone the release of its custom 5G modem.

Anticipation for Apple’s 5G modem release next year

Fortunately for Apple, engineers appear to have resolved some issues, paving the way for the realization of the company’s 5G modem. Several reports, including those from DMN, indicate that Apple is planning to release its first devices featuring its modem next year.

Recent reports revealed that Apple has developed a promising modem codenamed “V59” or “Centauri,” which can support not just 5G, but also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Sources suggest that this modem will significantly reduce battery usage, particularly in Low Power Mode.

The iPhone SE 4 is expected to be the first device to incorporate Apple’s 5G modem, likely announced in the first half of 2025. By the close of next year, at least one model of the iPhone 17, most probably the iPhone 17 Air, will also feature the new modem. Despite the advantages in battery efficiency, Apple remains hesitant to include its modem in premium products like the Pro iPhones.

5G mmWave and eSIM-only iPhone 16 still only available in the US

A recent disclosure from The Information indicated that Apple’s current 5G modem prototypes still fall short of matching Qualcomm’s 5G chipset in performance. Furthermore, these prototypes do not support the ultra-fast 5G mmWave.

Although it may take time before Apple integrates its 5G modem across its entire iPhone lineup, this new modem could be particularly advantageous for devices like the Apple Watch, where energy efficiency is prioritized over raw performance. Moreover, creating its own 5G modem will enable Apple to reduce costs—though it doesn’t guarantee that these savings will be passed on to consumers.

The anticipation for Apple’s 5G modem is building, especially for those looking to purchase a new iPhone SE next year.
