Three months ago, Apple Intelligence was officially introduced with iOS 18.1, and since then, new features have been gradually implemented. However, the upcoming iPhone update, iOS 18.4, is set to significantly enhance Apple Intelligence functionalities. Below are seven anticipated features and modifications to look forward to.
Onscreen Awareness for Siri
One of the standout experiences of using a Vision Pro is realizing that visionOS inherently understands what you’re focusing on. With iOS 18.4, Siri will acquire similar capabilities on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Onscreen awareness will allow you to issue requests to Siri that pertain to what you’re currently viewing, with the assistant able to comprehend your instructions. For instance, if your sister sends you her new address through iMessage, you can simply say, “Add this address to her contact,” and Siri will execute it without needing additional clarification.
Siri’s New App Action Catalog
With a system known as App Intents, iOS 18.4 will empower Siri to execute hundreds of new app actions—without the need to open the applications themselves.
Even more impressive will be Siri’s capability to perform these actions across various apps. For example, you can request Siri to locate a particular photo, edit it, and then move that photo into a designated folder in the Files app—entirely through voice commands.
Personal Context Knowledge
Siri will gain a deeper understanding of your personal context, accessing key insights about you similar to what a human assistant would recognize.
For instance, if you’re trying to remember a recipe a friend shared with you—but can’t recall if it was in an email, text, or note—Siri will be able to locate it for you. Additionally, Apple’s assistant will assist in retrieving and sharing details like your passport number, calendar events, and more.
Priority Notifications
In a manner akin to the existing ‘Priority’ function in the revamped Mail app, AI will soon highlight the most crucial notifications at the top of your notification list.
Priority notifications leverage Apple Intelligence’s language processing to recognize what constitutes a significant alert. This will alleviate the need for users to manage their notifications manually while ensuring they stay updated with critical alerts.
Sketch Style in Image Playground
Apple previously showcased the Image Playground app featuring three distinct style options for images: Animation, Illustration, and Sketch.
However, as of iOS 18.3, the Sketch option has been missing. Expect its return in iOS 18.4, offering a new method for styling your original AI-generated images.
Apple Intelligence in the EU
Apple has announced that it will provide comprehensive Apple Intelligence support in the EU starting in April with the release of iOS 18.4.
Currently, AI features are limited to the Mac within the EU, but soon, both the iPhone and iPad will also enjoy the full suite of Apple Intelligence functionalities.
New AI Languages
Lastly, Apple plans to introduce additional supported languages for Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.4.
The company hasn’t specified which languages will take precedence, but it has confirmed that the following will be incorporated this year: Chinese, English (India), English (Singapore), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, and “other languages.”
