Since the launch of the M4 Mac mini, I was eager to get my hands on Satechi’s hub stand designed for it. I previously owned the original version compatible with the earlier Mac mini design, which was fantastic. It significantly expanded the number of ports and storage capacity available. After a long wait, Satechi has introduced a revamped version to match the M4 Mac mini’s new design. The big question is: was it worth it? Here’s my detailed hands-on review.
This hub is specifically engineered for the M4 Mac mini’s form factor. Although it has a USB-C connection that allows it to be used with other devices, it won’t fit snugly with anything else except for the M4 Mac mini. This product was purpose-built to fit seamlessly beneath the M4 Mac mini, aligning perfectly with its design, color, and materials. Additionally, it features a small cutout for easy access to the power button.
Inside the package, you’ll find:
- The hub
- SSD enclosure screwdriver
- Thermal pad
Everything necessary for the installation and removal of NVMe storage is included.
While I appreciate the redesign of the M4 Mac mini, I’ve noticed that Apple has eliminated a few ports that were available in the older model, particularly the USB-A ports. Even though USB-A is gradually becoming less common, I still rely on dongles for my peripherals. For instance, my keyboard supports both Bluetooth and a 2.4 GHz dongle for connection, and I prefer the dongle for reduced latency.
Here are the additional ports you’ll find:
- Host cable – USB-C 3.2 Gen 2
- SD Card Reader – speeds up to 312 MB/s (4.0 UHS-II)
- 2 USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports – speeds up to 10Gbps
- 1 USB-A 2.0 port – speeds up to 480Mbps
- M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure – speeds up to 10Gbps
- Supports 2230/2242/2260/2280 SSDs
These ports, along with the HDMI, Ethernet, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, and two USB-C 3.0 ports, provide a comprehensive variety of connectivity options. Moreover, it supports all mainstream NVMe SSD types, ensuring easy integration of any existing SSDs.
My Perspective
This device excels in user-friendliness—it’s incredibly straightforward to use. Simply position the hub beneath your M4 Mac mini, plug in the host cable to one of the Thunderbolt ports, and your device will recognize it immediately. It’s important to note that if you utilize an NVMe SSD, it will show up as a folder on your Finder or desktop, similar to any other external SSD. It’s crucial to clarify that it doesn’t merge with your internal storage; instead, it offers a seamless physical and visual integration.
My primary applications for this hub are the NVMe SSD options and the USB-A ports for adding peripherals. Although I don’t frequently utilize SD cards, it’s convenient to have that option available, especially with one of the fastest transfer speeds currently available.
Furthermore, Satechi has taken heat management into account by slightly elevating the Mac mini with the included nubs to allow proper airflow for heat dissipation. They’ve also integrated additional ventilation to aid in cooling the NVMe SSD.
Lastly, I want to highlight the thoughtful cutout for the power button. Apple decided to position the power button underneath the Mac mini, an interesting choice for aesthetics. Satechi counters this by providing a cutout that maintains accessibility. This modification enhances convenience, allowing users to power the device off and on without having to bend down to reach the Mac mini.
Pricing & Availability
The M4 Mac mini stand and hub can be purchased directly from Satechi for $99. Remarkably, they have retained the price from the previous model, avoiding any price hikes. If you’re interested in obtaining one, I recommend acting quickly as this is a limited release. While Satechi plans to restock, additional inventory isn’t expected until March. According to their announcement, pre-orders can be placed once the stock runs out, with deliveries anticipated in March.
What are your thoughts? Are you a user of the M4 Mac mini? Do you see value in using a hub like this? Is $99 a reasonable price? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
