F1 App ‘Lapz’ for Vision Pro Removed from TestFlight

In contrast to the iPhone and iPad, the Apple Vision Pro offers a limited range of applications in the App Store. Nevertheless, developers have been actively investigating the device’s potential through various projects, including an innovative Formula 1 app called “Lapz.” Unfortunately, it seems the app may not reach the App Store after all.

Developers develop F1 app for Vision Pro, but…

For those who might not be aware, Lapz enables Apple Vision Pro users to experience F1 races on a virtual large screen, while also offering a 3D floating model that displays driver positions. The app was inspired by a concept video created by VFX artist John LePore, highlighting the potential capabilities of Vision Pro.

Currently distributed through TestFlight, the developers aim to refine the app before its broader launch. Despite being in beta, the app has attracted significant attention since its introduction. However, as reported by UploadVR, this promising venture now seems to be coming to a halt.

The reason for this is the request from Formula One Group to remove the app from TestFlight—not from Apple. The likely cause is the unauthorized use of F1 content and branding, despite the app allowing users to log into the official F1TV stream through web views.

The Lapz developers are actively seeking to “secure a digital license” so the app can resume its operations. For the time being, however, Lapz has been taken off TestFlight, and users will lose access to the app after February 8, when the current version expires. The developers are considering licensing the app to other motorsport organizations if a deal with Formula One Group cannot be reached.

While Formula One Group has the right to request the app’s removal, it is disappointing for Vision Pro users to lose yet another streaming option. Just last month, the widely-used YouTube client “Juno” was also removed from the App Store at Google’s request.

It’s important to note that neither F1 nor YouTube has official applications for visionOS.
