Back in March, Google went on to announce that it was about to recall close to 1.7 million Fitbit Ionic smartwatches after it received reports of 78 burns. Recently, a lawsuit that was filed against the company stated that the recalls didn’t go far enough- and the defects were present in all of the Google smartwatches.
According to the documents presented in court, all the fitness trackers and smartwatches made by Fitbit had the same defect- a massive tendency to overheat- which then went on to cause burns of fire hazards. The complaint also went on to accuse the company of trying to deflect a major portion of the blame on consumer hygiene and not a manufacturing defect.
Fitbit Ionic Can Be A Major Fire Hazard
A couple of plaintiffs that put up the lawsuit had bought devices from the lineup of Versa- a Versa 2 and a Versa Lite- but not the Fitbit Ionic. Also, the complaint showed several pictures of burns from users who had several other devices, which included the Sense, Blaze, Versa 3, Inspire, and Inspire 2. It also went on to include several multiple accounts of Fitbit owners that had previously been ghosted by the customer support of the company.
The point of contention is that although the Fitbit did recall the Ionic, it hasn’t yet recalled every other device that could potentially burn its consumers. As a result, consumers could be verily unaware of the fact that they are carrying with them a potential fire hazard. Also, while the company did announce full refunds to owners of the new Ionic, it has not yet been fulfilling its promise of actually issuing a refund.
