Former iOS Engineer Apologizes After Apple Dismisses Lawsuit

In March, Apple took legal action against a former employee, an iOS Software Engineer, for leaking sensitive information to The Wall Street Journal and The Information. Nearly a year later, the lawsuit has been dropped, and the engineer has publicly apologized.

Apple leaker disclosed details about Journal app, Vision Pro, and more

Andrew Aude, who previously served as an iOS Software Engineer at Apple, sent numerous messages during his tenure to reporters at The Wall Street Journal and The Information containing confidential content.

Aude was identified as the source for a report concerning Apple’s Journal app prior to its launch. He also shared confidential information related to Vision Pro and the concept of “spatial computing,” among other disclosures.

Apple’s lawsuit against Aude claimed he leaked “information about over half a dozen different Apple policies and products.”

Recently, public records indicate that the case has been dismissed following a settlement agreement.

Coincidentally, Aude shared the following apology on X yesterday.

I dedicated nearly eight years of my life to being a software engineer at Apple. Throughout this period, I gained access to confidential internal Apple information, including unreleased products and features. Instead of safeguarding this information, I mistakenly shared it with journalists covering the company. I now realize this was a significant and costly error. Many professional relationships that took years to build have been damaged. My previously successful career as a software engineer has been jeopardized, making it challenging to restore. The act of leaking was not worth it. I genuinely apologize to my former colleagues, who worked tirelessly on Apple projects and endeavored to keep them confidential. They deserved better.

While specifics regarding the settlement remain undisclosed, Aude’s apology was probably one of the conditions.
