The Galaxy SmartTag+ from Samsung has arrived to rival the upcoming Apple’s AirTags finder for lost items. The device had been announced under the name of Galaxy SmartTag in January. The teaser included a version to be powered by ultra-wideband (UWB) that would be known as the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag+. However, no dates were specified.
Specifications Of The Galaxy SmartTag+
The latest version supports both UWB and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). The device is an attachment for any daily use item that one would want to track, such as keychains and backpacks.
Similar to Apple’s, now confirmed officially, AirTags, the Galaxy SmartTag+, exclusive to those with Samsung devices, shall be more precise in its finding capabilities. This is thanks to the UWB technology that the basic version does not have.
When an item is lost, users of Galaxy SmartTag+ can use Augmented Reality technology to find out the location of the item with the help of their Samsung mobile. This is due to its spatial awareness. On approaching the tag, users can also choose to make it ring loudly.
Similar to the UWB devices from Tile, Samsung’s device will also have something like a community find. This means any Galaxy device nearby that is allowed can help with the search and notify the owner via a network called SmartThings Find. The company claims that the data is protected under encryption so no one else will know the location.
However, the device only comes in two color variants for now: gray and black. Moreover, since the new attachments rely mainly on UWB, the company has stated that they are compatible with only those Galaxy devices with in-built UWB technology. The list includes the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy Note20 Ultra.
