In contrast to Android, only a few of Google’s iOS applications feature the newest version of Material Design. Today, the Gmail app for iPhone and iPad has finally received an update incorporating a Material 3 redesign.
The homepage now showcases a pill-shaped search bar as opposed to the previous rounded rectangle design. If you have Google Chat and/or Meet integrated, the bottom bar indicates your current tab with a pill shape instead of just highlighting the icon.
Blue has become the primary accent color in the app, with red largely phased out, and various shades are utilized based on whether the light or dark theme is active.
On Android, Material You enhances the experience through a “Dynamic Color” theme that adapts to your device’s wallpaper, providing a consistent visual theme across both applications and OS elements. Unfortunately, iOS has yet to implement such a feature after all this time. It might have been intriguing if Google created an account-level color selection for these platforms or synchronized it from Android for the web version.
Old vs. new
The “Compose” floating action button (FAB) now adopts a rounded rectangle shape in a striking shade of blue when dark mode is activated. However, the hamburger menu/navigation drawer appears to remain unchanged in this update.
When you open an email, you’ll see the overflow icon in the top-right corner transition from three vertical dots to a circular arrangement of horizontal dots.
Additionally, Google Chat for iOS has recently been updated with Material You, although it has already implemented a floating bottom bar. Other Workspace applications such as Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet remain unchanged for now.
Other first-party apps utilizing Material 3 include the Google (Search) app, Maps (bottom bar), Photos, Home, Translate, and Gemini.
The Material 3 redesign is included in version 6.0.250119 of Gmail for iPhone and iPad, which was released today via the App Store.
