While some users reported that the app continued displaying rerouting alerts, others said that the maps became blank, rendering the app useless. Many customers were taken aback by the outage, saying they couldn’t recall a time when the mapping services had been down for so long.

Google did not provide any more information on the outage or what caused it; nevertheless, the Google Maps platform status dashboard recognized the event and stated that services had been interrupted. Google announced that the problem has been resolved a few hours later. “We can confirm that the technical problem that occurred earlier today has been resolved,” a business spokeswoman told Mashable.

On Twitter, though, the craze remained, with “Google Maps” trending globally.

People seeking actual maps cracked jokes, while others mocked other service providers like Apple Maps, claiming that they might not want to use it even in this case.
