According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Apple is reconsidering the possibility of monetizing its Maps application through search advertisements. The company currently employs this strategy for its News and Stocks apps. This move aims to enhance its internal advertising business.
This is not the first instance of Apple exploring this concept. Gurman notes that the company previously considered integrating search ads a few years back, allowing businesses to pay for improved search visibility:
A few years ago, Apple employees examined the integration of search ads into their Maps applications. This would function similarly to Google Maps, enabling businesses to compensate Apple for a higher position in search results.
Currently, the concept has resurfaced within Apple. During a recent meeting, the potential for monetization was discussed once more, particularly regarding search ads. Gurman also mentions the possibility of certain locations being displayed ‘more prominently on the map.’
There is no set timeline for the introduction of search ads in Apple Maps, and development for this initiative has yet to commence. Nonetheless, Apple is actively considering how to implement such a change.
