Apple has begun alerting users with older software that there’s a strong incentive to update. iCloud backups will soon be unavailable—and will eventually be deleted—for devices using iOS 8 and earlier versions.
Devices with outdated software will need to upgrade or utilize alternative backup methods
Apple has released a new support document detailing this impending change:
Effective December 18, 2024, device backups will necessitate iOS 9 or later. This aligns with our stated minimum software requirements. Up until this date, you’ll continue to use the service normally. However, after this point, your backup data will be eliminated unless you update to iOS 9 or a later version.
Therefore, if your device is currently operating on iOS 8 or an earlier version, it will no longer be able to generate iCloud backups starting in mid-December, and all existing backups will be permanently removed.
The fix? Upgrade to iOS 9 or a newer version.
For those who are unable or unwilling to update their devices, another option is available. As outlined by Apple, manual backups can be performed using a Mac or PC.
You can connect your iPhone to a Mac with macOS Catalina or later to back up the device through Finder.
If using a PC or an older macOS version, you can back up your device using the Apple Devices or iTunes applications.
Given that iOS 8 is now a decade old, this news may not come as a shock. However, if you possess an older iPhone or iPad that has been steadily operating on outdated software, it may be time to consider an upgrade.
