Have you ever imagined how a Windows Phone, particularly the Lumia 1020, would appear if it were running on iOS? I hadn’t either, but it’s quite an intriguing concept to explore. Experiencing iOS on such radically different designs is rare, which definitely sparked my curiosity.
On the r/hackintosh subreddit, a hobbyist showcased their project: an iPhone SE 3 that has been modified to fit within the casing of a Nokia Lumia 1020. While that phone had its quirks, its practicality has diminished significantly since Windows Phone is now obsolete.
When I mention that it houses the internals of an iPhone SE 3, I truly mean it. Every component—including the 12MP rear camera, taptic engine, and Touch ID sensor—has been successfully integrated into the Lumia 1020’s shell. A SIM card tray? Absolutely. There’s a flash too. And yes, 5G connectivity is operational.
The Lightning port has also been transferred, which could be seen as a drawback; however, considering that the Lumia 1020 originally used microUSB, this actually represents an improvement. To maintain the aesthetic of the Lumia 1020, Touch ID has been relocated to the back of the device.
The Lumia 1020 possessed a camera shutter button, somewhat akin to the Camera Control feature on the iPhone 16. Naturally, it’s a challenge to integrate an additional button into the iPhone while ensuring proper software functionality, but the enthusiast found a creative workaround.
Instead of acting as a true shutter button, it functions as a second volume down button, facilitating photo capture within the camera app. A clever solution if you ask me.
In summary, all essential features of the Nokia Lumia 1020 have been retained, and I’m genuinely impressed that this was accomplished. It’s a fascinating project, with the only notable loss being the headphone jack.
