Apple is set to unveil an exciting new Home product shortly, which I have been referring to as the ‘HomePad.’ Here are five of its essential features.
7-inch Square Display
Initially, Mark Gurman indicated that the HomePad would feature “a screen roughly 6 inches in size.” However, he recently updated his prediction, stating that the expected dimension has increased to 7 inches.
This device is said to resemble a square iPad and is approximately the size of two iPhone 16 Pro Max models placed side by side. While it may be smaller than some users desire, this should help maintain a more affordable price point.
Innovative Operating System
The upcoming HomePad will be equipped with a brand new operating system, likely referred to as ‘homeOS.’
According to Gurman, the interface appears to merge aspects of the Apple Watch operating system with the iPhone’s recently introduced StandBy mode.
The display will adapt dynamically based on your proximity to the device. For example, it could show status updates from a distance, while closer interactions would reveal control options.
As expected, due to Gurman’s reference to ‘StandBy,’ the HomePad is anticipated to support widgets. You will likely be able to add these to the Home Screen, similar to how it’s done on iPhone and iPad.
It’s still uncertain whether third-party widgets will be allowed, but there’s a significant possibility. Apple has already developed technology in macOS that enables the use of iPhone widgets there, making it a reasonable expectation for the HomePad.
Accessories for Any Environment
When placed on its own, the HomePad may appear as just a straightforward smart display. However, Apple is developing a variety of bases and attachments to ensure it complements different areas in your home.
Gurman notes:
Apple has crafted various attachments for the device, including those that allow screens to be mounted on walls like traditional home-security panels. There are bases with extra speakers designed for the kitchen, bedside tables, or office desks.
These compatible accessories should help prevent the HomePad’s price from escalating (assuming they are sold separately). Crucially, they also recognize that different environments will call for distinct HomePad configurations.
AI-Enhanced Siri
Current Apple Home devices, including the HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV 4K, lack any form of Apple Intelligence features. Consequently, they still rely on the older version of Siri.
The HomePad, however, will introduce a revamped, AI-infused Siri, which is currently more capable—thanks largely to ChatGPT—and will be significantly enhanced with iOS 18.4.
This updated Siri will execute hundreds of new actions both within individual apps and across multiple apps, while grasping your personal context. If all works as planned, there should be far fewer instances of Siri responding with, “I’m sorry,” on the HomePad—a common frustration with the existing HomePod.
Overview of HomePad Features
The HomePad is anticipated to deliver a wide range of functionalities beyond those mentioned, such as acting as a smart home controller, FaceTime device, and more. However, the five features discussed above provide a solid foundation of what to expect from the core capabilities of the HomePad.
