iOS 18.2 has been launched, featuring an updated Mail app, fixes for the Photos app, and a host of other enhancements. Notably, new AI functionalities have been introduced, along with the notable addition of native language support for Apple Intelligence in five new regions outside the United States.
iOS 18.1’s Requirement of US English for Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence made its debut with iOS 18.1 back in October, bringing along a plethora of features designed for summarizing notifications, improving writing, removing unwanted items in Photos, and numerous other capabilities.
However, during its rollout, Apple Intelligence had two significant prerequisites:
- You needed an AI-compatible iPhone
- Your device needed to be configured to US English
Users located outside the United States still had access to the new AI features in iOS 18.1 (with exceptions in the EU and China), but only if they selected US English as their system language.
This was not an ideal situation, but Apple assured users that expanded language support for Apple Intelligence was on the horizon.
Now, with the release of iOS 18.2, the first round of language expansion has finally arrived.
Introduction of Five New Language Settings in iOS 18.2
Residents of the following five regions can now enjoy localized English support from Apple:
- Australia
- Canada
- New Zealand
- South Africa
- UK
This allows users to set their iPhones to the specific English variants corresponding to these areas while receiving fully optimized support from Apple Intelligence.
To change your language setting on your device, navigate to the Settings app, then to General, and finally to Language & Region.
While iOS 18.2 may not introduce drastically different language options beyond the previous US English support, the addition of localized English for these five key regions is a valuable upgrade.
As for support for non-English languages, Apple is currently working on those, with plans for an April release as part of iOS 18.4.
Have you tested the new Apple Intelligence support in any of the newly added regions? How is it performing for you? Share your experiences in the comments.
