The release of iOS 18.3 is imminent, as confirmed by today’s release candidate beta. This update will introduce improvements to notification summaries and will automatically activate Apple Intelligence for iPhone users, with similar updates expected for Mac and iPad users.
Apple Intelligence shifts to an opt-out system in iOS 18.3
Previously, Apple Intelligence required users to opt in to access its features.
During the installation of iOS 18.1 and 18.2, users were prompted to enable AI enhancements, and only upon agreement were those features activated.
This will change in the impending iOS 18.3 release.
According to Apple’s newly released beta notes, Apple Intelligence will be automatically activated upon installation for iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS 15.3.
Here are the official details regarding the change:
For newcomers or those upgrading to iOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence will be enabled automatically during the iPhone setup process. Users will gain access to Apple Intelligence features once their devices are configured. To opt out of Apple Intelligence, users must go to the Apple Intelligence & Siri Settings section and toggle off the Apple Intelligence option. This will deactivate Apple Intelligence features on their devices.
Similar information is provided for the iPadOS and macOS updates.
This change follows months of public availability of Apple Intelligence
For users with compatible AI devices, it’s likely that most have already activated Apple Intelligence.
For those who have not, the upcoming update will enable these AI capabilities automatically.
It remains uncertain what will occur for users who had previously activated Apple Intelligence and later chose to disable it.
We hope that iOS 18.3 and its associated updates won’t inadvertently reactivate these features, but we will have to see how things unfold after the public release.
While iOS 18.3 is primarily a minimal feature release, it does introduce several revisions to the AI notification summaries, which have been notably controversial.
Apple appears to believe that with the impending updates, the time is right to set AI features to active by default.
