In 2022, Apple enhanced iPhone capabilities by introducing satellite connectivity features with the iPhone 14. This advancement enables users to reach emergency services when they are out of range of cellular networks. The functionality received further improvements with iOS 18, allowing users to share messages with friends and family through satellite communication.
Initially, Apple collaborated with Globalstar to facilitate these satellite connectivity options for iPhone users. However, Bloomberg has disclosed that Apple has also been quietly partnering with SpaceX and T-Mobile to integrate Starlink satellite connectivity for iPhone devices.
The partnership between T-Mobile and SpaceX was announced in 2022, with T-Mobile previously indicating that only Samsung phones would benefit from Starlink connectivity. The carrier initiated beta registrations for this program in December.
According to Bloomberg’s report, T-Mobile has recently begun permitting a limited number of iPhones to test an early version of the Starlink service. This expansion is linked to the recent release of iOS 18.3, although Apple did not mention this update in the release notes.
T-Mobile communicated to selected users: “You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.” Additionally, T-Mobile’s support website was updated this week to confirm that its Starlink satellite service is now compatible with iPhones.
Currently, T-Mobile’s Starlink connectivity supports texting, with future plans to broaden the service to include data and voice calls.
This is how the service operates: When a T-Mobile iPhone is in an area lacking cellular service, devices participating in the Starlink program will attempt to connect with SpaceX satellites first. Users will also have the option to activate texting through the satellite menu for Globalstar service or reach emergency services via Apple.
The initial Starlink setup only allows texting. Nonetheless, SpaceX and T-Mobile intend to extend the service to include data connections and voice calls down the line. Presently, the program is only available in the United States, contrasting with Apple’s Globalstar service, which functions in multiple countries. SpaceX aims to expand Starlink to more carriers worldwide.
Bloomberg highlights a significant distinction between Globalstar and Starlink satellite services:
Another key difference lies in how each service operates. Currently, the Apple feature requires users to orient their iPhone towards the sky to locate a satellite. In contrast, the Starlink option is designed to work automatically, even if the phone is kept in a user’s pocket.
T-Mobile anticipates launching Starlink connectivity to all users “sometime in 2025.” Customers can register for the beta program on T-Mobile’s website.
