The release of iOS 18.3 is imminent, as the RC beta has just been launched today. According to the update notes, users can expect two enhancements related to the Camera Control button on the iPhone 16, as well as improvements in visual intelligence.
New capabilities of visual intelligence in iOS 18.3
With iOS 18.2, Apple introduced visual intelligence to the Camera Control feature on the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models.
This enables users to long-press the Camera Control button, activating a specialized AI-driven camera mode to engage with their surroundings.
Now, in iOS 18.3, visual intelligence is adding two new functionalities:
- Your iPhone can now recognize dates on posters or flyers and allow you to add events directly to your calendar.
- Visual intelligence can also identify various plants and animals.
Although these features have been showcased by Apple previously, this is the first time they will be available with Camera Control in iOS 18.3.
Integration with Apple apps illustrates Camera Control’s effectiveness
Visual intelligence heavily utilizes ChatGPT and Google for much of its data, yet one of the most impactful uses I’ve found is its integration with Apple’s applications.
For instance, you can easily aim your iPhone at a restaurant or business to access its corresponding Maps listing.
Another prime example is its practicality for seamlessly adding an event to the Calendar app. I hope to see further integrations like this in the near future to enhance the utility of visual intelligence.
In addition to these Camera Control enhancements, iOS 18.3 will introduce updates to Apple Intelligence notification summaries, alongside various bug fixes, including a resolution for a commonly reported Calculator issue.
