Welcome to Rumor Replay, a brand-new weekly section on DMN that offers a brief summary of the latest Apple product rumors, supported by my insights and commentary. In today’s edition: we’re exploring iOS 19 rumors hinting at a delayed launch, the iPhone 17 Pro and Air distinctions, future prospects for AirPods Max, and much more.

Here’s what’s buzzing in Apple rumors this week.

iOS 19 to feature delayed upgrades

iOS 19 rumors

Can you believe it? We are just about six months away from Apple revealing its next major software updates, including iOS 19—it’s time for the rumors to begin!

This week, Mark Gurman reported that “an unusually high number of features planned for iOS 19 (beyond the new Siri) have already been pushed back to spring 2026 (when iOS 19.4 is expected).”

No further specifics have been mentioned beyond Siri. However, I’m curious whether other platforms aside from iOS 19 might be receiving prioritized upgrades this year—though there haven’t been any hints of that yet.

Updates to iOS 18 and its follow-ups, 18.1 and 18.2, have been quite significant. It’s possible we could see more substantial updates for macOS and/or iPadOS next year, particularly as the former could be gearing up to support a touch-based Mac—an undertaking that would likely be quite complex.

iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Air distinctions emerge

iPhone 17 Pro camera bump

A recent report from The Information provided insights into the features of the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Air. The iPhone 17 Pro will feature a larger, rectangular camera bump and transition from titanium to aluminum. Conversely, the iPhone 17 Air will necessitate several trade-offs to achieve its slender design.

These new details complicate what will undoubtedly be a challenging purchasing choice next year.

As Apple scales back the iPhone 17 Air’s camera to a single rear lens, the company seems to be enhancing the Pro line instead. Assuming both models share the same primary camera—which is likely—a significant portion of consumers’ decisions will rest on two desirable factors: the choice between a thinner device or a richer camera experience.

LLM Siri complicates the ‘new era’ narrative

Apple is currently navigating a turbulent shift towards its ‘new era for Siri,’ with indications from Mark Gurman suggesting that the next 18 months will be even more chaotic.

Although updates to Siri are being introduced as part of iOS 18, an even more significant revolution is on the horizon with iOS 19.4: the debut of an LLM-based Siri.

The potential for a ChatGPT-like Siri is substantial, especially with the rollout of more voice-activated devices (like the HomePod). However, Apple must demonstrate that the existing version of Siri is competent enough to justify the ‘new era’ designation.

No AirPods Max 2 on the horizon

AirPods Max 2

On a final note, the underwhelming update for AirPods Max this fall seems to be the last for the device for the time being. Gurman states that Apple has ‘no definitive plans’ to enhance AirPods Max ‘in a significant manner.’ This likely indicates no upgrade to the H2 chip and its associated features.

I believe Apple is making a misstep by allowing AirPods Max to stagnate. Perhaps there are legitimate reasons preventing the company from simply introducing the H2 chip in a successor model, but I remain skeptical. It’s disappointing that the more affordably priced AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 have advantages over the premium AirPods Max.

Anecdotally, I’ve been noticing more AirPods Max in circulation, so if sales are indeed improving, hopefully Apple will take notice and give the product some well-deserved attention.
