iPad’s Strikeout: Apple Goes 0-3 with Latest App Launches

While Apple has been excelling with its latest iPhone applications, it’s missing the mark entirely when it comes to iPad compatibility.

First up was Journal, the iPhone-exclusive app introduced with iOS 17.2. Apple had another opportunity to bring Journal to the iPad with iOS and iPadOS 18, but while the iPhone version received significant updates, the iPad version remained sidelined.

Last year, Apple made a commendable effort with Apple Sports on iPhone. Although the app has improved considerably in recent updates, it still remains limited to the iPhone. The countdown is on to see whether an Apple Sports widget or an Apple Sports version for iPad arrives first.

As we head out to the ballgame, don’t look for an invitation from the iPad. Although Apple’s new Invites app can send invites to various devices, an iPad app is still not available.

At least the iPhone versions of Sports and Invites are functional on the iPad.

The absence of an iPad version for Journal is particularly disappointing for iPad users since it is a system app, rather than one available for download from the App Store. Unfortunately, this means that users cannot utilize even the iPhone version, which would function well in Stage Manager mode.

iPad users may have hoped that the era of iPhone-exclusive apps from Apple had concluded, especially since Apple finally introduced both Weather and Calculator to the iPad. However, these exciting and genuinely useful project apps remain exclusive to the iPhone for the time being.

Apple is showcasing impressive new apps, but when it comes to delivering iPad versions, it might be time to consider bringing in the specialists.
