While features such as camera enhancements, quicker performance, and larger displays often grab the limelight with new iPhones, Apple’s smartphones have also significantly advanced in safety capabilities over the years. Let’s explore 6 vital safety features in the iPhone 16 that provide true peace of mind, along with how to test or activate them.

Although the features detailed below are not solely unique to the iPhone 16, they represent new functionalities for anyone upgrading from an iPhone 13, 13 Pro, or earlier models.

The iPhone 14 and 14 Pro were the pioneers for new abilities such as Emergency SOS via satellite and Roadside Assistance via satellite, with two years of complimentary access.

Come fall 2023, Apple expanded these features, making them available for both iPhone 14 and 15 users until fall 2025, while iPhone 16 owners will have access until fall 2026.

In addition, features like Crash Detection, Safety Check, and Stolen Device Protection are included on modern iPhones and iOS without requiring a subscription. Let’s delve deeper.

iPhone 16: 6 invaluable safety features

iPhone 16 6 safety features explained

Emergency SOS – via satellite and otherwise

The Emergency SOS feature has been part of the iPhone for quite a while, but the recent enhancement now includes the ability to connect via satellite. This feature allows you to request emergency assistance even without WiFi or cellular service (in supported countries).

While we hope you never have to use it, Apple has incorporated a demo feature into iOS for iPhone 14, 15, and 16 so that you can familiarize yourself with this function before a real emergency arises. Check out our comprehensive guide on how to test it out.

Roadside Assistance via satellite

In addition to connecting with emergency services, Apple has collaborated with AAA and Verizon to provide Roadside Assistance when you find yourself without a signal.

This is another useful feature to learn about ahead of time—find out all the details in our full post:

Satellite messaging

Building on Emergency SOS and Roadside Assistance, Apple introduced Messaging via satellite with iOS 18. This enables users to communicate with friends and family even without WiFi or cellular service.

This feature proved to be lifesaving shortly after its launch during Hurricane Helene. If you find yourself in a situation without connection, iPhone 14 or newer will prompt you in the Messages app to connect to a satellite for sending messages.

Discover more about how it operates:

Crash Detection

This functionality comes pre-enabled on the iPhone 14, 15, and 16 (as well as Apple Watch 8 and later). You can verify that it’s active by navigating to Settings > Emergency SOS > Crash Detection.

In the event of a severe car accident, your iPhone or Apple Watch will sound an alarm and show an alert. If you do not respond within 20 seconds, your device will automatically call emergency services. Keep in mind this feature does require a WiFi or cellular connection to function.

Since its introduction, we’ve seen numerous instances where this feature has been credited with saving lives.

Safety Check

This feature is accessible on any iPhone running iOS 16 or later. It is specifically designed to assist individuals at risk of domestic abuse or similar situations. Safety Check provides users the capability to immediately revoke location access from others, including apps, and guides users through a security review.

You can find this feature by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check or read our full guide for comprehensive details:

Stolen Device Protection

In early 2024, Apple introduced a new security feature called Stolen Device Protection. This came in response to the increasing incidence of iPhone thefts in public areas like bars.

The great advantage of this feature is that it adds substantial security without worsening the user experience.

If you have not enabled it or wish to check its status, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Stolen Device Protection.
