After the analysis of the Pro Max variant last September, the DXOMARK camera results for the standard iPhone 16 have now been released, placing it at #20.
The organization highlights that although the camera specifications are nearly the same as those of the iPhone 15, advancements in software have led to improved scores in various tests.
iPhone 16 DXOMARK Camera Evaluation
Earlier, DXOMARK revealed the test outcomes for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which secured the #4 position overall and #1 in the video category.
Now, similar evaluations have been performed on the base model, earning it a total score of 147 compared to the Pro Max’s 157.
In the DXOMARK Camera assessments, the Apple iPhone 16 demonstrated commendable performance within its category. Apart from the enhanced autofocus and quicker lens in the ultra-wide camera, the device shares virtually the same camera hardware as its predecessor. Nevertheless, software upgrades have contributed to enhanced performance in multiple test parameters.
Our assessments revealed that the camera produced impressive still photos and videos with excellent exposure, good contrast, and pleasing skin tones. The video stabilization system ensured smooth and stable recordings during motion. However, the lack of a dedicated telephoto lens resulted in medium to long-range images being somewhat lacking in detail and texture.
DXOMARK is well-known for conducting comprehensive tests that blend scientific evaluations in controlled environments with real-world shooting scenarios. In total, smartphone cameras are tested across 17 different categories.
- Eight strengths identified:
- Excellent brightness and contrast in HDR displays
- Pleasing skin tones and vibrant colors for both photo and video
- High detail levels in bright conditions and indoors
- Quick and generally precise autofocus
- Smooth zoom functionality in previews
- Vivid brightness and contrast in HDR video displays
- Minimal video noise
- Effective video stabilization
And six drawbacks:
- Restricted dynamic range can lead to highlight clipping in both photos and videos
- Presence of flare, hue shift artifacts, and ringing in images
- Limited capabilities for long-range telephoto zoom
- Loss of intricate detail in video, particularly in low-light situations
- Artifacts, including flare, motion blur in low light, and aliasing, can appear in videos
- Noise in shadow areas and low-light photographs
The device achieved the highest ratings for exposure and color accuracy, scoring 124/30 and 129/130, respectively.
Video performance was rated exceptionally well, scoring 154/159, matching the high score of the Pro Max.
Video quality was impressive for this category of device. Similar to still images, the overall video quality was quite comparable to its predecessor. Our testers observed improvements, particularly in the color department, with better white balance. The new version also offered superior video texture compared to last year’s model, although noise could be slightly more pronounced on the iPhone 16.
